Finally replaced my failing hard drive (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/2007/11/tablet-is-functional-but-funky.html). Swapped it in last night, installed the backup image, and I've been scanning, cleaning, and testing it today. So far, so good. In fact, it's better than ever.

I bumped up to a Hitachi Travelstar 7k200 (http://tinyurl.com/2opkgb). 160 GB, 7200 rpm and 16 MB cache. That's up across the board from 100 GB, 5400 rpm, and 8 MB cache. Apps load quicker and run smoother. Boot time is trimmed by a noticeable though indeterminable margin.

And I got it at a good price for the model, around $100, from a parts dealer on eBay, surplusexcess (http://stores.ebay.com/surplusexcess). Quick service and low shipping too.

Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye on things, make sure there's no other cause for the issue, but my speedy new drive is working well so far.
