Shooting down old satellites looking pretty good now
It was a little more than two years ago when the world got their panties in a bunch when China shot down one of their old satellites with a missile (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16689558/), prompting accusations that it was a cover story for a move to militarize space. Maybe they were laying the groundwork for that, but I never questioned the practicality of shooting down old or malfunctioning satellites. You let those things pile up eventually there's going to be trouble. Well, "eventually" was yesterday.
Yep, a derelict Russian satellite collided with a U.S. satellite over Siberia (http://tinyurl.com/d983qp). Probably won't be a threat to anything, but I'm pretty sure that U.S. communication satellite wasn't launched for decoration.
