Thanks to Timbo and Mr. Einstein (http://tinyurl.com/yx4jjt) for their opinions on the PS3 absurdity. Quite pleased that we agree on the core issue, but I really think the PS3 will come out on top, despite its production issues and likely flaws. Why? Same reason the iPod + iTunes combo is a winner: content drives sales.

Even without the full legacy catalog (about 200 PS1 & PS2 games won't play on PS3), PS3 has a larger standing catalog than XBox. Furthermore, and this is highly underrated, the PS3 plays Blu-Ray movies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc). Though it's far from ubiquitous, Blu-Ray movies are on the shelves and people with high def TVs are hungry for content. Sony, for all their faults, made the right move by pushing the format ahead of the PS3 launch and giving their target audience extra incentive to shell out the bucks.

And don't tell me Blu-Ray might not beat HD-DVD. Sony has backed it with hardware and content. Apple and Disney are going Blu. But none of that matters because the porn industry (http://tinyurl.com/w9psa) is starting to do Blu. Porn decided the VHS-Betamax war. It drove DVD adoption. HD doesn't have a chance. Blu-Ray is going to come out on top and Sony picked a winner... for once.

PS3: Content drives sales

  1. Sad, but true. Sony (the least worthy in my opinion) will win :(
