Been watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution (http://www.hulu.com/jamie-olivers-food-revolution) on Hulu and it is painful to see how ill-prepared he was for the ignorance and resistance he would face. No surprise to me that kids can't recognize common fruits and vegetables, nor use cutlery. Even less surprise that the adults think quantity trumps quality.
The big joke is how hard the rule is that the kids need to like the food served at the schools. The kids don't need to like math or reading or anything else forced on them at school, but it's critically important they like the food. Why not let them watch cartoons instead of history too? Well, he's not back to his fully happy self yet, but we're happy Homer's home and urinating on his own. Doing a lot of napping as he recovers, but when he perks up, he's back to his old self, except for not being able to groom himself. Oh, he is normally so fastidious. Put together that magnetic board (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/2010/03/depots-of-home-and-office-really-suck.html) I wanted to assemble last week. Found all the magnets I wanted at Staples but the right sized board was a no-show. Then I spotted the 18" steel rulers and thought, "it can't be that simple."
But it was and now I've got magnets holding things to the post next to my desk. Need to work on the arrangement and whether to add strips to the sides of the post, but it works. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
My long-standing tradition of celebrating [Pi] Day (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/search/label/%CF%80%20day) and cursing the clock-shifting of Daylight Saving Time (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/search?q=DST) happened to coincide on the same day this year, which no doubt would have led to an interesting crossover blog entry. Alas. I was preoccupied and missed it, so here's a belated jab. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
Plan was to bring Homer home tonight, but his urine is still not flowing freely. Quite frankly, I don't think the docs really know what's wrong with him, but we'll see. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
Well, unfortunately, Homer's urinary problem (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/2010/01/homer-in-hospital.html) has returned so we're moving forward with surgery. Alternative is to hope dietary solutions finally take, but they haven't yet. Could be worse; another cat at the hospital suffered two blocks in a matter of days. Hoping for the best. Had an idea yesterday to set up a little magnet board in my office. Thought I could pop into the local Office Depot for the supplies. Such a mistake.
Magnet boards were on one side of the store. Magnets were on the other side, and the selection for both was terrible. I wound up not getting anything.
Reminded me of my experiences with Home Depot, which almost invariably disappoints. It's to the point that we usually opt to go to Lowe's despite the extra distance. Going to start treating Office Depot the same way. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
Been using RedLaser (http://www.gottabemobile.com/2009/10/24/iphone-app-redlaser-cuts-my-clutter), a barcode scanner for the iPhone, to catalogue books at work. Makes me think about different ways to use codes. This one is a QR code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code), which is very popular in Japan. It carries alphanumeric data, anything from one word to a URL. Easy to generate via online services (http://qrcode.kaywa.com/). Easily read by my iPhone via a reader like i-nigma (http://www.i-nigma.com/Downloadi-nigmaReader.html). There's some use here for me. I'm just not sure what that is yet. Behold, the mighty Chewbacca, a mere 20 minutes after stepping off the plane in Wasilla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasilla,_Alaska). Bashing stormtroopers left him ill-prepared for dodging Alaskan hunters. He win be missed.
