I f---ing agree
Oh, how I wish Newsweek had released this story about President-Elect Obama sooner...
[The debates unnerved both candidates. When he was preparing for them during the Democratic primaries, Obama was recorded saying, "I don't consider this to be a good format for me, which makes me more cautious. I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, 'You know, this is a stupid question, but let me ... answer it.' So when Brian Williams is asking me about what's a personal thing that you've done [that's green], and I say, you know, 'Well, I planted a bunch of trees.' And he says, 'I'm talking about personal.' What I'm thinking in my head is, 'Well, the truth is, Brian, we can't solve global warming because I f---ing changed light bulbs in my house. It's because of something collective] (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/05/obama-we-cant-solve-globa_n_141407.html)
While I did f---ing change light bulbs in my house, I completely agree. I'm glad I did it, but it's such a small contribution compared to all I do and should do, and nothing more than a token gesture in the larger scheme. It really takes a collective effort, and we all must do more to pitch in.

I don't get it, isn't the collective the sum of personal, and didn't Obama say we should fill our tires with air? Why didn't he just say he filled his tires with air?

I think his point was that as president he'd have to address global warming on the macro scale, whereas asking what he does personally is on the micro scale. Swapping light bulbs or filling tires is great, but how does sharing that tell us how he'd attend to the problem as president? It'd be different if this was a personal interview, but in a presidential debate, I want to learn what a candidate will do as president, not what they do as a citizen. For the venue, I think it was a weak question.
