Cloudy with a little drizzle of rain this Halloween, but that hasn't kept the Trick-or-Treaters away. Pretty good turnout. Too many kids without costumes though. Saw a few who just put paint on their faces. I give them credit for making an effort, but Halloween should be for costumes not just candy. BTW, if you're wearing make-up with your costume, definitely spring for the good stuff. Totally worth it. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
If there's one fake holiday I should recognize, it's National Handwriting Day (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/search/label/National%20Handwriting%20Day). But if there are two, then the other should be National Cat Day (http://www.nationalcatday.com/)! I happily recognize this day on behalf of myself, Sumocat, as well as my subservient underlings who seek to usurp my power: Patty. Spooky, and Homer. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
Between getting my Halloween costume (http://sumocats.blogspot.com/2009/10/cheshires-stepping-out.html) ready and wallowing through a general malaise, I've let my blogging slide, allowing several days to pass between installing Windows 7 on my tablet and scribbling out a blog entry about it. Still working on getting everything to work right (need to write that up for GBM), but as you can see, my blogging tools are working fine. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
Fake Steve Jobs (http://www.fakesteve.net/2009/10/were-going-to-have-news-tomorrow.html) is calling a Mac announcement tomorrow with stuff even Gruber doesn't know about. Jon Gruber (http://daringfireball.net/linked/2009/10/19/tomorrow) responds by repeating a bunch of previously rumored stuff and one new tidbit: a multi-touch touchpad for desktop Macs that is "mentioned nowhere else." I say: pfft. I've been waiting on those for two years (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/2007/08/about-mac-tablet-speculation.html). [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
Been watching The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien on Hulu (http://www.hulu.com/the-tonight-show-with-conan-obrien) pretty regularly (okay, every night), and while I'm still really enjoying it, I have also noticed a number of jokes getting recycled. Happens often enough that I've turned it into a drinking game (without the drinking). Drink when one of the following punchlines are used:
Kirstie Alley is fat or likes to eat Larry King is old, really old Paris Hilton has sex with a lot of dudes Bill Clinton hooks up with a lot of ladies Oprah Winfrey is really rich
That President Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/09/obama-wins-nobel-peace-pr_n_314907.html) for his efforts to restore global trust and renew our collective hope for peace is a tremendous honor for both him and the nation that elected him. However, I cannot help bat question whether the award has come too soon.
While I agree our president of the past nine months has done much to promote peace, he's not the man I want to see recognized for those efforts. Rather, I want to see that award go to the president who will build on those efforts for the next few years to come. He, I believe, will prove even more deserving of this honor, but his major accomplishments are still some years away.
In the meantime, I would have preferred to see the award go to someone move in need of its recognition and resources. While President Obama needs our support to continue his work, he already has recognition and resources in abundance.
That said, the spirit in which he has accepted the award shows that our president understands the work yet to be clone. I stand with those who are proud of our president but are more focused of being proud of him in the future. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
A man tried to extort money out of David Letterman (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/01/david-letterman-extortion_n_307221.html) by threatening to reveal a relationship he had with a staffer. He was busted when Dave refused to play ball and went to the authorities to set a trap. No surprise there. Extortion works well against those with secrets, but Dave isn't secretive; he's private.
Confront a person with their secrets. They'll try to hide them. Violate a person's privacy, they'll attack. And that's what Dave did. He hit back at his would-be extortionist and laid out his side to his audience, wiping out the presumed leverage. The pathetic part is it's actually known that Dave has had relationships with staffers. His wife who he married in March, long after this affair ended, used to work for him. Good job researching that blackmail scheme, brainiac. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
This photo is either of folks in Brazil thrilled (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/02/rio-celebrates-2016-olymp_n_308074.html?slidenumber=2#slide_image) that Rio de Janeiro will be the site of the 2016 Olympics or conservatives in the U.S. cheering (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/02/conservatives-revel-in-ob_n_307794.html) that it won't be in here. Either way. I have to admit they wanted and deserved it more. [+/-] Hide/Show Text [+/-] Hide/Show Text
