Indelible Ink
Between the evaporation of JournalSpace (http://lifehacker.com/5122848/hard-lessons-in-the-importance-of-backups-journalspace-wiped-out) and the hacking of Twitter (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/05/twitters-hacked-bill-orei_n_155302.html), blog security will no doubt be a topic of conversation this week. It brings to mind an entry I wrote early on about the innate security of ink blogging.
[Hack-Resistant Blog
Not that this is a problem for anyone, but after reading a bit on web security, I thought about the potential that someone could hack into a high-profile blog and post false entries and/or mess with existing entries. It occurred to me that, if I started building an audience, I'd be quite buffered against this possibility since my entries are handwritten and generated & stored locally. I doubt a hacker would bother trying to mimic my handwriting, and I could restore it all from my local copies.] (http://sumocat.blogspot.com/2005/10/hack-resistant-blog.html)
The gist is that it'd be difficult for a hacker to fake one of my entries, as happened on Twitter, and since I generate and save my ink locally, my content is protected against digital oblivion.
But since I've started an inkless sidebar, I do need to practice backing up my online data, So each month, I'm going to download my archive pages. It's a simple back-up system for us Blogger users.
