Intel SSD: Forget speed, look at power consumption!
Among the big announcements at IDF this week is a new line of solid-state drives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive) being produced by Intel (http://www.gottabemobile.com/Intel+Prepping+Some+SSDs+Fast+Ones+At+That.aspx). Everyone seems quite excited about the speeds they're supposed to attain, which are impressive, but for some reason the phenomenally low power consumption is being grossly overlooked.
The "mainstream" model presented is advertised to consume 0.15 watts when active. By comparison, my tablet's current hard drive is advertised as consuming 0.2 watts when OFF. Not idle and waiting for action, but off and waiting to be turned on. When active, my drive consumes more than 2 watts, around fifteen times that of Intel's mainstream SSD.
So while the speed of Intel's "extreme" SSD is definitely eye-catching, the prospect of nearly eliminating drive power consumption should be the main attraction to mobile PC users.
Update! I should have known Sierra Modro (http://www.gottabemobile.com/Intel+SSD+Power+Savings.aspx) would have my back on this.
