Whatever happened to critical thinking?
Yesterday, everyone was abuzz over a tweet from Hugh Hefner claiming Playboy for iPad would show full nudity. People questioned how it would be done since Apple does not allow nudity on apps. Today, it's revealed to be a web app, not bound by Apple's rules, and everyone claims to have been tricked, but here's the thing: Hef never used to word "app."
Never claimed it would be an app. Web is not subject to Apple's rules. 1+1=2. So why the hell did everyone add that up to 3?
Some hours ago I read a blog post that opened with an outrageous scare tactic and closed with a sales pitch (http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/01/20/ifixit-tears-down-apples-diabolical-pentalobe-screws-which-they-can-fix-for-9-95/). Nothing wrong with that really. The problem is so damn many other blogs failed to recognize the ploy and parroted the post like It was gospel.
If only these were anomalies, but sadly these are just the most recent of a seemingly increasing pattern of mindless echoing. The truly outrageous aspect is how obvious the truth is. If it sounds unlikely, if it sounds ridiculous, that's not a sign to pass on the word; it's a warning to stop and think.
